Ground freezing

When shafts are sunk in mining or when “cross-cuts” (i.e. the connections between two tunnel tubes) are created in tunnel construction, the principle of icing is often used: In areas where drilling is to be carried out, the groundwater is deliberately frozen. This makes shaft construction easier. Powerful, mobile refrigeration systems and a special refrigerant (CaCl2), which flows at around -35 °C through the probes inserted into the ground, are used.

L&R has experience in this special field of civil engineering and has been working with leading European companies in shaft and tunnel construction for many years. The icing refrigeration systems are usually housed in containers and are extremely robust. This means that they can be easily transported from one place of use to another.
